One of my primary rules in designing spaces is to prioritize natural materials & embrace patina. When your home ages, so should its materials, fostering character and an authentic, timeless feel. Today, I’m sharing the key materials I choose to achieve that enduring charm and patina.
Metals | Hardware & Plumbing Burnished Brass & Nickel, Unlacquered Brass, Polished Nickel, Copper, Bronze
Opting for door and cabinet hardware, as well as plumbing fixtures with living finishes, ensures they develop a distinctive patina over time, evolving beautifully with human interaction. Each of these finishes acquires a unique character as they age.
Stone | Tile & Countertops Marble, Limestone, Soapstone, Quartzite, Onyx, Travertine, Slate, Zinc, Bronze
Notice the trend? All-natural, no man made materials. Despite the belief that quartz is the only durable option, it too can scratch and stain. Marble remains my top choice for countertops; its etching adds character reminiscent of the aged marble sidewalks in Italy, evoking that vacation-like charm in our homes.
Wall Finishes Roman Clay, Limewash, Venetian & Lime Plaster, Mineral Paint, Slurry
While walls may not develop a patina, these finishes infuse warmth and depth into any space, enriching its ambiance.
Lighting Unlacquered Brass, Polished Nickel, Copper, Zinc, Bronze
Light reflecting off these patina finishes creates a magical experience, elevating the entire space. Investing in plumbing and lighting is crucial; they are the jewelry that adorns the home, transforming it into a radiant sanctuary.
These materials and finishes not only enhance your home’s beauty but also ensure that each element ages gracefully, telling the story of your space and creating an enchanting atmosphere.
With Love, Charisa
